Don't put a number on yourself!

Over the years I've heard so many times, "oh I'd love to start running but I'm too old", "my wife/husband says I'm too old", "my kids say I'm too old".  Sure your age is a number, but when it comes to running, there's no reason to let it stop you. Don't let yourself be bound by attaching a number to yourself...

I think the first time I heard this was from my former supervisor, Roger.  At the time, I worked at a place where the majority of my co-workers were involved in some sort of sporting activity. There was always discussion on the latest of what everyone was doing. On the topic of running one day, Roger mentioned he wished  he would have started running when he was young because now his wife says he's to old to start, Roger was 34 years old. I thought that was so sad, and throughout the years, I've heard different versions of the age old story.

The beauty of running is a person can start at any stage of life.  Lots of runners are late starters, 30's, 40's 50's +.  There's so much positive you can add to your life by running, don't miss out on it because of your age.

So now let me tell you about our friend Ray.  One early morning, while he was on vacation in Hawaii, Ray was woke by the sounds of clapping, laughter, and cheering outside his hotel room window.  When he looked out to investigate he found he was watching marathon runners pass by.  He went back to sleep and when he woke up the second time, runners were still at it.  He ventured outside to watch. He had so much fun and was so inspired that he made a promise to come back the following year to run the marathon.  Ray was not a runner, and he was 50 years old. Not only did he keep his promise and run the Hawaii marathon the next year, he's run over 20 marathons since then.

That's what we want you to be, be inspired, don't be afraid, and don't let your age stop you from some of the greatest experiences of  your life. There's a whole world of runners out there waiting to meet you and help you make memories to last a lifetime.

Along the way you'll find adventure...

You'll stay fit and have fun...

You'll meet new friends...

You'll see people of all ages...

Shadow says, "you might even see me"...

Happy running!

  1. I could write a book about this but I'll keep it short! My father suffered a small heart attack at age 75. He was fit but not an exerciser. He started walking and was bored so he started running. This weekend he ran a 5k where the age groups topped out at "60 and over". He took 3rd place in that age group with 26:30. Oh, I forgot to mention, he is now 83! He inspired me to start running a year and a half ago at 48. It's never too late!

    1. Mary that's so awesome! I couldn't help but cry when I read this! Bart is big into age graded time, he said "holy smokes" scrambled downstairs to get the calculations, and here's what he found out. -age graded time for 26:30 5k for an 83 year old is equivalent to 14:59. Your dad's an elite runner! If he gets bored with local races, he should look into the USATF senior games. Congratulations to both of you on your running! Thanks for sharing this wonderful story with us! ~Eve
