Turf toe is a sprain of the main joint of the big toe. It happens when the toe is bent up into hyperextension, such as pushing off into a sprint and having the toe get stuck flat on the ground. Turf toe is often associated with football but occurs in a wide range of sports. This same type of injury that happens to someone playing beach volleyball is called sand toe. I guess in my case, when it happens without turf or sand being involved, it's just called a sprained toe. Although I wish I had a fancier name to give it...
This all started April 26th, I have no one else to blame but myself!
Reenactment:
wearing shoes without heel support
+ running up stairs
+ having foot slip out of shoe, bending the big toe far past the point God had intended it to bend
= turf toe, sand toe, sprained toe
After all these months, I still have to be extremely careful to avoid any stretching exercises or running that puts stress on bending the toe. Wow! I'm going to be extra careful never to do that again!
